Should College Athletes Be Paid?
When college is mentioned, sports and its athletes are brought up as well. The NCAA is a non-profit organization that directs all of colleges' athletic programs. The people watch sports for entertainment, to cheer on their favorite team, to experience the thrill of competitiveness. In a way we serve as customers, providing views to the broadcasters of college sports games. The NCAA makes $6 billion annually through broadcasting off of games, sales of athletic wear with athletes' names on it, and the list goes on. Without these college athletes, the NCAA wouldn't be making any money at all. These players risk their bodies in all of these contact sports, most recently Kevin Ware suffered a gruesome incident resulting in a leg broken in two areas. So the question arises, do college athletes deserve pay? College and the NCAA are no different than professional sports. The NFL alone generally revenues approximately $6 billion (The same as the NCAA!) The real difference here is that NFL players get paid salaries, college athletes however do not. People argue that college athletes in turn, receive education and a scholarship but others argue that isn't enough to compensate for injuries that are likely to occur. Now, should college athletes be paid? I personally believe they should; $6 billion is more than enough to handle college sports, therefore allowing college athletes to be paid.
